Judd Short wins at IHSA state track meet
On Saturday, May 28, 1977, Judd Short became the first athlete in the history of LeRoy High School to become a state champ. In 1963 Jim Norton placed third in the high jump and Dave Carlson in 1975, placed fourth as a heavyweight in wrestling, but no one has ever won a state title before Judd.
The meet lasted two days with all shot put competitors competing on Friday and the finalists on Saturday. At the end of the first day Short led the field with a toss of 54′ 9.5″. On Saturday, Short let loose on his second throw to insure a first place finish with a throw of 55’6″. His nearest competitor had a put of 54’5″.
Becoming the first state champ in LeRoy’s history has not come easy for Judd. He has put in many hours of practice during the past five years to earn his position. Self-discipline, dedication, sacrifice and the desire to become the best all contributed to his success this past Saturday.
